A video uploaded on X, formerly Twitter, shows a large line of illegal immigrants in New York City waiting to apply for “free” housing that was funded by taxpayers.
The taxpayer-funded housing program is part of the city’s “sanctuary city” policy that ensures free housing for illegal migrants, who are apparently abusing the system.
In the clip posted on X, taken from a show on Fox Business, reporter Madison Alworth talked about the valid concerns because migrants are “coming in faster than normally seen.” She added that it still hasn’t been confirmed how much the influx will cost the city.
Alworth added that, up to this point, the migrant crisis has cost the Big Apple a whopping $3 billion. Worse, costs continue to skyrocket as more migrants arrive in the city.
According to Alworth, New York is struggling because it’s not just dealing with newly arrived migrants. The city is also stuck with people who have already been in New York City housing but are being reticketed.
Illegal migrants who have already had free housing in New York City eventually receive 30- to 60-day eviction notices telling them that they have to leave their shelter. However, since New York is a sanctuary city, housing is guaranteed for illegal migrants. This means if they wait in line again, migrants can easily reapply and be rehoused.
As of writing, at least 70,000 illegal aliens are residing in NYC. The city has faced an even greater surge of illegal migrants because of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott busing them into the city from the border.
Abbott posted on X, saying that the state has transported more than 95,000 migrants to sanctuary cities.
“Sanctuary cities like NYC & Chicago have seen only a FRACTION of what overwhelmed Texas border towns face daily. We will continue our transportation mission until Biden reverses course on his open border policies,” wrote Abbott. (Related: REPLACEMENTS: New York Gov. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been urging Congress and the federal government to send financial aid to the city so it can deal with the surge of illegal migrants while also condemning Abbott’s political tactic.
Adams said the city is in dire need of federal and state help to resettle and support the remaining 68,000 migrants currently in New York, along with “the thousands of individuals who continue to arrive every single week.”
Over the past year, New York City has seen tens of thousands of asylum-seekers arrive, in part due to Texas’ busing campaign.
Adams and other Democratic Party leaders have denounced Abbott’s busing campaign as cruel, while also denouncing the refusal of Texas officials to coordinate the arrivals of migrants with their New York counterparts.
Overall, officials in the states targeted by the busing have said the migrants are arriving with little to no warning. In some cases, people are being dropped off in the middle of the night in winter weather.
To fight Abbott’s efforts, Adams issued an order requiring all charter buses whose operators know they are carrying migrants to drop off their passengers at the Port Authority during normal business hours.
However, instead of following that order, Texas officials are directing buses to smaller communities around the city, where migrants are given train tickets bound for New York City.
Several local media reports have revealed that many communities in both New York and New Jersey are being affected. Some are already acting to issue similar orders banning surprise arrivals.
Since early January, nine buses of migrants from Texas and one from Louisiana had been reported by state officials in New Jersey. Many or all of those on board seemed to be bound for New York. In total, at least 400 people arrived in the latest bus group.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s spokesperson said that the administration has tracked the recent arrival of several buses of migrant families at various train stations. The spokesperson added that New Jersey is mainly being used as a transit point for these families and that all or nearly all of them continued with their travels on the way to New York City.
The spokesperson concluded that they are coordinating with federal and local partners on this matter, including colleagues across the Hudson.
