The Los Angeles City Council arrived at a unanimous decision earlier this week, ordering the city attorney’s office to embark on a criminal probe against Governor Greg Abbott over Texas’ migrant busing program. Should the investigation prove that there were crimes committed such as kidnapping and human trafficking through the migrant bus program, lawsuits will be filed.
The 13-0 vote was made following the 11th bus load of illegal migrants that arrived in the Sanctuary “City of Angels” jurisdiction, carrying 42 asylum seekers from Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Venezuela and even Russia. The migrants included 21 adults and 14 children, according to the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles (CHIRLA). Since the start of the program on June 14, Abbott’s program has transported 435 migrants. In total, more than 30,000 migrants have been transported to Democrat-led cities around the country, including New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
For one of the council members, what Abbott is doing is “racist.” “The competition between these Republican governors about who could be more racist, I think, is just an utter failure and shows clearly that they do not have any intention to govern effectively,” Hugo Soto-Martinez said, claiming that the Republican governor is disregarding the lives of these illegals’ families and that he should be fully investigated on the accountability of his “criminal actions.”
Moreover, L.A. Mayor Karen Bass (D-CA) expressed her displeasure with Abbott’s busing program, claiming that there has been little communication from Texas officials. “We hear about the buses headed our way when they’re on the way. We have no idea who’s going to be on the bus, how many people it is, or what condition they’re going to be in when they get here,” Bass said Wednesday. “Sometimes they haven’t had any food; they barely have enough water.”
In a statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday, the Texas governor’s office answered all the allegations thrown against him, highlighting L.A.’s status as a sanctuary city. “The L.A. City Council members are complete hypocrites,” Abbott spokesman Andrew Mahaleris slammed the council. “In June, they unanimously voted to become a sanctuary city, welcoming migrants to the city. Texas began busing migrants to sanctuary cities like Los Angeles last year to provide relief to our overrun and overwhelmed border communities.”

He also asserted that migrants had willingly chosen to go to Los Angeles on buses stocked with food and water, saying they “signed a voluntary consent waiver available in multiple languages upon boarding that they agreed on the destination.”
Mahaleris also pointed out that the city council should call on President Joe Biden to look into his border policies. Obviously, Biden has been soft on border control and continuously failed to secure the border, “instead of complaining about dealing with a fraction of the border crisis our small border towns deal with every day.”
Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have both engaged in sending migrants to other states. To some observers, L.A.’s decision was quite “baseless” as the illegal border crossers could no longer be contained and maintained by the Lone Star State. Abbott argued other states must help share the burden, especially the Democrat states because they voted for this. (Related: Biden’s federal border patrol agents sabotage Texas Gov. New York City has received by far the most migrants from Texas in recent months, according to reports, much to the anger of Mayor Eric Adams. However, documents revealed that Adams sent back dozens of migrants to Florida and Texas. He did not stop within the United States territory.
As per the information obtained exclusively by Politico through a public information request, from April 2022 to April 2023, the Big Apple’s government spent around $50,000 to resettle 114 migrant households in cities around the U.S. and the globe. The most common destinations were Florida, which received 28 families, and Texas, which received 14. He also transported more to countries in South America and one illegal all the way to China.
The independent news outlet noted that this brings Adams in a tight spot. “The migrant crisis is costing the city billions. And as pressure on its shelter system reaches a critical level, the mayor is trying every possible release valve from busing asylum-seekers to other destinations to housing them in former jails,” the article read.
Like the L.A. City Council, the NYC mayor condemned Abbott and DeSantis back in September last year for busing migrants to his city and called the program a stunt. “This was part of a political ploy and that’s what we need to understand,” he said during an appearance on MSNBC.
“Less than three weeks ago, Mayor Adams said busing migrants is ‘morally bankrupt.’ Where is all the outrage and condemnation from the White House and Democrats for one of their own sending migrants out of town, out of state, and even out of the country?” Mahaleris commented, adding that the mayor should also call on Biden and Congress to do their jobs to secure the southern border.
