An English-language daily newspaper backed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was reported to have paid huge amounts for advertising space on Time magazine.
Disclosures under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) revealed that China Daily paid $656,885 in advertising costs to Time between May 1 and Oct. 31. Six months before the said time frame, the newspaper owned by the CCP’s Central Propaganda Department paid $649,603 to the mainstream media (MSM) publication.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, the MSM magazine has published pro-China articles in both its print and online publications since 2020 as part of a content-sharing deal with China Daily. These articles often promoted Chinese culture, Beijing’s climate change initiatives and China’s technology.
Incidentally, some content from China Daily published by Time featured firms blacklisted by the U.S. for their role in aiding China’s military apparatus and its surveillance state. DJI, a blacklisted Chinese drone manufacturer, was featured in a 2021 piece.
Another company, the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp. (CASIC), was featured in a write-up highlighting its contributions to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. CASIC makes missiles for the People’s Liberation Army, China’s military force.
Reports stated that Time magazine – considered “one of the most authoritative guides in current affairs, politics, business, health, science and entertainment” – has been strengthening its ties with the Chinese paper. Its partnership with China Daily comes amid scrutiny of the CCP’s efforts to influence American audiences through propaganda. The Department of Justice even ordered China Daily and other Chinese state-controlled media outlets in 2020 to reveal all their content-sharing contracts with American news outlets.
The same FARA disclosures revealed that China Daily reduced its spending for several other MSM outlets such as USA Today, Foreign Policy, Financial Times and the Los Angeles Times. It slashed total payments to these publications from $900,540 to $586,860.
Under the ownership of left-wing billionaire activist Marc Benioff, the iconic magazine has bolstered its ties with the CCP and its propaganda outlets. Since he acquired Time in 2018, Benioff has began his aggressive push into the Chinese target market.
The magazine’s CEO is a staunch supporter of and donor to the Democratic Party. Early in 2022, Benioff and his family visited President Joe Biden at the White House. Incidentally, Benioff has been accused of hypocrisy due to his vocal criticism of conservative policies in the U.S. coupled with his deliberate refusal to acknowledge China’s dismal human rights record.
Benioff is also dubbed “Tech’s Woke CEO” as he also heads the software company Salesforce. His company recently inked a deal with Chinese e-commerce platform Alibaba, with Salesforce providing cloud computing services to the company founded by Jack Ma.
In 2019, Benioff announced that Salesforce would no longer do business with any company that sells certain types of firearms or ammunition magazines. In September 2022, he threatened to shut down his company’s operations in states that restrict access to abortion.
