The head of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) has emphasized the need for serious consequences for unlawful border crossers amid an influx of illegals at the nation’s border with Mexico.
USBP Chief Jason Owens stressed this point during an exclusive interview with CBS News. He told the news outlet’s Camilo Montoya-Galvez that imposing “consequences” on illegal immigrants who enter the country unlawfully is very important. The interview incidentally focused on strategies to deter the unprecedented number of illegal border crossings under the Biden administration.
Among the consequences Owens put forward were prison time, “removal” from the country and a potential “ban” on re-entry for those caught crossing the border unlawfully. He also emphasized the crucial role of USBP agents in enforcing these consequences.
“Everything revolves around being able to deliver a consequence for an action that you don’t want a person to commit. If people know that there’s going to be a consequence for breaking the law, they’re going to be less likely to do it,” the USBP chief told Montoya-Galvez.
“Jail time – I’m talking about jail time. I’m talking about being removed from the country. I’m talking about being banned from being able to come back because you chose to come in the illegal way instead of the established lawful pathways that we set for you.”
Owens also lauded the collaborative relationship between the USBP and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) in protecting the southern border. He dubbed the DPS as an “invaluable partner” to the USBP, something YourNews pointed out as “a departure from the Department of Homeland Security‘s (DHS) previous characterizations of the relationship between the federal and state agencies.”
“Owens’ stance reflects an ongoing confrontation between Texas and the federal government over the state’s authority in managing illegal immigration issues. Texas has asserted its constitutional right to self-defense, while DHS has accused state officials of disrupting federal operations and blocking [USBP] activities, particularly after Texas took control over Shelby Park in Eagle Pass.” (Related: Biden regime threatens WAR with Texas over border security: “Give us access, or else.”)
“[The USBP chief’s] comments indicate a commitment to maintaining and strengthening the partnership between federal and Texas state authorities in the interest of national and community safety.”
The interview between Owens and Montoya-Galvez also touched on the Texas Senate Bill (SB 4), which is currently under judicial review. The USBP chief refrained from expressing an opinion on the measure, which allows Texas law enforcement to arrest and deport illegals that cross the border unlawfully. It also empowers judges to deport illegals taken into custody to Mexico.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed SB 4 into law in December, with the law originally set to take effect on March 5. But the Biden administration alongside other parties challenged it in court via an emergency request. According to the administration, individual states such as Texas have no authority to legislate on immigration.
U.S. District Judge David Ezra, who was appointed by the late former President Ronald Reagan, granted the preliminary injunction sought by the Biden administration. However, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Appeals Court said in a brief order that SB 4 could go into effect on March 10 if the U.S. Supreme Court declines to intervene. The high court did step in, siding with the Lone Star State.
The federal high court ruled in a 6-3 decision on March 19 that SB 4 can go into effect while litigation continues in lower courts. But this victory was short-lived, as the appellate court put the bill on hold.
